Australia’s Coastal Camping Adventures
Australia has 35,000km of coastline offering some of the world’s most spectacular coastal camping. From the tropical north to the rugged southern coasts, each region offers a unique coastal camping experience.
Queensland’s Tropical Coast
The Whitsunday Islands, Fraser Island (K’gari), the Daintree and Cape York Peninsula offer tropical coastal camping at its finest. Warm water year-round, spectacular marine life and lush vegetation define Queensland’s coastal camps.
NSW Coastal Camping
The NSW coast between Sydney and the Queensland border offers hundreds of coastal camping options. Myall Lakes, Crowdy Bay, Hat Head and Arakoon national parks all offer stunning beachfront camping relatively close to Sydney.
Victorian Coastal Gems
The Great Ocean Road, Wilsons Promontory and the Gippsland Lakes all offer exceptional coastal camping in Victoria. Wilsons Promontory’s Tidal River campground is one of Australia’s most popular coastal camping destinations.
Western Australia’s Remote Coasts
The Kimberley Coast, Ningaloo Reef and the South West coast of WA offer some of Australia’s most remote and spectacular coastal camping. Many sites require 4WD access and careful planning.
Safety at Coastal Camps
Always check surf conditions and swim between the flags where available. In northern Australia, saltwater crocodiles inhabit coastal areas – never camp directly on the waterfront without checking local advice. Marine stingers are present in tropical waters from November to May.
