Income Opportunities for Rural Landowners
Rural land offers multiple income streams beyond traditional farming. Camping and tourism-related activities are among the fastest-growing sources of rural income in Australia.
Camping and Glamping
Basic bush camping can generate $15-25 per site per night with minimal infrastructure investment. Glamping setups with bell tents, beds and basic amenities can command $80-200 per night. A five-site glamping operation running 150 nights per year generates $60,000-150,000 in revenue.
Farm Experiences
Adding farm experiences to camping increases both nightly rates and booking conversion. Sheep shearing demonstrations, cattle mustering experiences, farm tours and farm-to-table meals all add significant value. Guests pay premium prices for authentic agricultural experiences they cannot get elsewhere.
Events and Retreats
Rural properties are increasingly popular for weddings, corporate retreats, yoga and wellness retreats, photography workshops and music events. A single weekend event can generate more revenue than a month of regular camping. Requires more infrastructure and planning but offers excellent returns.
Conservation Income
Landowners with significant native vegetation may be eligible for carbon farming income through the Australian Carbon Credit Unit scheme. Conservation covenants with land trusts can provide upfront payments in exchange for permanent protection of natural areas.
Getting Started
Start with what you have. A beautiful dam, a shady creek flat or a hilltop view is all you need to attract your first campers. Reinvest early income into improving facilities gradually rather than spending heavily upfront.
