Essential Caravan Tips for Australian Travel
Caravanning in Australia is one of life’s great pleasures when you get it right. These tips from experienced Australian caravanners will help you avoid the most common mistakes and get more from every trip.
Towing Safety
Never exceed your vehicle’s rated tow capacity. Load your caravan with heavy items low and forward of the axle. Aim for 8-12% of the loaded caravan weight on the towball. Get your loaded rig weighed at a weighbridge on your first trip – most people are surprised by the result.
Setting Up Camp
Always level your caravan side-to-side first using levelling blocks, then front-to-back using the jockey wheel. A level van prevents door and window issues and ensures your fridge runs efficiently. Invest in a quality spirit level that lives permanently in your van.
Power Management
Understand your 12V power system before you leave. Know how much power your fridge, lights and water pump use daily. A 200W solar panel and 100Ah AGM battery is the minimum for comfortable off-grid camping for two people. Upgrade to lithium batteries for extended off-grid capability.
Water Management
Most caravans have 80-100L fresh water tanks. This lasts 3-4 days for two people with careful use. Always fill up whenever you have the opportunity in remote areas. Carry an additional 20L jerry can as emergency reserve.
Maintenance on the Road
Check tyre pressures weekly including the spare. Inspect wheel bearings every 10,000km or annually. Check all external sealants annually and reseal as needed. Lubricate all moving parts including stabiliser legs, hitch and jockey wheel regularly.
