Tent Camping in Australia
Tent camping is the most immersive way to experience Australia’s incredible natural environments. With the right gear and knowledge, tent camping opens up thousands of locations that larger rigs can’t access.
Choosing the Right Tent
Match your tent to your use. A 3-season tent suits most Australian camping. A 4-season tent is needed for alpine camping in Victoria and Tasmania. For family camping, a large dome or cabin tent offers more living space. For backpacking and remote hiking, a lightweight 2-person tent is essential.
Tent Setup Tips
- Always use a groundsheet or footprint to protect the tent floor
- Orient the door away from the prevailing wind
- Clear the site of rocks and sticks before pitching
- Peg out the fly first in windy conditions
- In rain, set up under trees but not directly under dead branches
Sleeping Warm
Choose a sleeping bag rated at least 5 degrees below the expected minimum temperature. In Australia’s alpine areas, temperatures can drop below zero even in summer. A sleeping mat with good insulation rating (R-value) is as important as the bag itself.
Wildlife and Tent Camping
Never store food in your tent – this attracts wildlife including possums, bandicoots and in some areas, dingoes. Always shake out shoes and clothing before putting them on – spiders and scorpions seek warmth overnight. In snake country, keep your tent zipped closed at all times.
