The Simpson Desert crossing is Australia’s ultimate 4WD adventure with 1,000 plus sand dunes stretching from Birdsville to Mount Dare. Here is what the glossy travel brochures do not tell you.
Permits and Paperwork
You need permits from three separate state governments to cross the Simpson legally. Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory all require separate applications. The Simpson Desert Regional Reserve permit from SA is the most important.
The Real Water Situation
For two people crossing east to west in 4-6 days, carry a minimum of 80 litres in addition to your vehicle’s standard tank. Summer crossings require significantly more.
Tyre Pressures Matter Most
Drop to 18-20psi for sand dune crossings. Most first-timers run too much pressure and spend their trip getting bogged. A quality portable compressor is non-negotiable.
