When to Visit: Dry Season vs Wet Season
The dry season from May to October is the classic time to visit. Roads are open, waterfalls are accessible and wildlife congregates around permanent water. The wet season from November to April brings spectacular electrical storms and flooding that closes most tracks.
Campgrounds in Kakadu
- Merl Campground: The largest and most accessible with powered and unpowered sites, hot showers and a pool
- Muirella Park: Quieter with a bush setting, closer to Yellow Water Billabong
- Mardugal: Set beside the South Alligator River floodplain with incredible sunset views
- Gungurul: Walk-in only, small and peaceful, close to the Anbangbang rock art gallery
Wildlife Safety
Saltwater crocodiles inhabit ALL waterways in Kakadu. Never swim in rivers or billabongs without checking current signage and local advice.
